Sure sounds like a hardware error to me. I'd suspect bad blocks on
the hard drive, but it could be any number of things from a loose
cable to bad RAM to bad firmware to who-knows-what.
Don't trust the hard drive 'til you know exactly what's going
on--that means, ``make backups, don't trust it for anything
critical, and don't be surprised if you're already hosed.'' If
you've got another hard drive available (of if you've got the cash
to buy a new one), it's probably worthwhile just doing a swap.
