can a shell script alter crontab?

I'm making a shell script to install a piece of software.
I want that script to ADD a line to the end of a user's crontab.
But the /var/cron/tabs files say not to edit them directly,
and `crontab -e` goes into interactive vi.

Anyone know how to have a shell script alter crontab?
