3.1 Hanging

Hi,

I am running 3.1 GENERIC (from the CD) - dmesg below.

On 1 occasion I have had the system hang just after the date appears on the
console. The login prompt does not appear. This occured after resetting the
machine because of the problem below. I could not ssh to the machine, even
though the system had started all the daemons.

I have had the system die while running - twice within a 6 hour period. Both
times I could not login at the console. I could enter my username, but after
pressing enter the password prompt never appears. I could ping the machine,
but none of the running services would respond (ssh, smtp, http). Log files
for both instances show connections starting but not finishing. The tcpserver
daemon controlling the qmail smtp and pop services, and the qmail send
program both show a steady increase in the number of connections, but no
connections are completed and released. See example log output below.

It's almost as if no new processes could be started.

This started happening after I patched the httpd daemon using 005_httpd.patch
from ftp.openbsd.org, although I cannot see why that patch would affect a
restart!

The system itself is a new installation, built 1 week ago. I had no trouble
since the install, until after patching apache, but that has to be a
coincidence.

Does anyone have any ideas, or further questions that I could answer to help
track this problem?

Thanks in advance,

Abdul
