Network (Interface suffix and connecting)

I have a NE2K nic on my OPBS2.9. During bootup, I do not see any
network driver getting loaded. I tried to define the IP address in
"hostname.ne0" and that did not do anything. What are the common
suffixes for the various network interfaces?

Once I have my NIC configured, how do I startup telnetd or sshd.
Initially, I will used telnet to configure the ssh environment. How do
I go about starting these services?
