Ah, someone solved the problem -- the thing has to be put into DOS
Printing mode.  Which I'd noticed, but forgotten about.

Both /dev/lpt0 and /dev/lpa0 seem to work.  I know lpa0 is supposed to
be "polled".  What's the difference in practical terms?
