Exactly the same for me (using OpenBSD and FreeBSD) using XFree86-4.1.0!
XF86Setup (XFree86-3.x compatible) and the text-based xf86config
will work for configuration, but not the new graphical frontend xf86cfg.

I have a i810E(M) Motherboard (or similar; it's a Compaq PC).
The Graphics Card is identified as a i815 (AFAIK all i81x are software
compatible - e.g. Intel published just one driver for all i81x based
graphics).

VGA16 will work on FreeBSD (just low resolution), SVGA hangs and
will leave the gfx in an unusable state (blank & 'out of sync').
You can fix that again if you remote login, kill X and start XF86Setup
(which works for me and reinitializes the graphics card).

Even though i81x is officially supported in XFree-4.1.0 on FreeBSD
(please remember to read the F.A.Q: you have to enable apgart),
I could not get it working.

AFAIK i81x is not supported on OBSD right now, but somebody is
porting a (XFree86?-) patch from NetBSD to OpenBSD which is highly
experimental (and not published yet).

The same Motherboard/onboard-gfx will work quite good on Linux and
XFree86-4.

I really don't know, but it seems that they're at least not 100% compatible!
