I had a bunch of similar problems with Cisco switches (c2924xl-en) and I found that turning off... shoot, I can't remember the name of the option, but if you power on the machine and the light on the switch stays amber for a minute then turns green, then it's set wrong. (It comes from the factory set wrong.) According to Cisco, when the light's amber the switch is trying to see if there's another switch/hub plugged into that port and learn the MAC addresses, but if you have a PC plugged into the port then you don't need it.
