sf0: watchdog timeout

Greetings,

I've got a firewall running on some new hardware in a datacenter which is
not yet in production. We've been transferring large files with FTP while
installing software, however, sf0 (the external interface) keeps freezing up
with 'watchdog timeout' messages. ifconfig'ing the interface down and back
up appears to fix the problem, but obviously, this isn't a solution. The
system is running 2.8-stable as of June. What I'm wondering is if an upgrade
to 2.9 would solve the problem. I see in CVS that the next revision of the
sf driver (src/sys/dev/pci/if_sf.c) has a message about 'new timeouts'. I'd
like to avoid upgrading without being sure that it will solve the problem.
I've seen a few messages in the archive about similar problems, but not with
the starfire driver. Has anyone experienced this? Any thoughts on a
solution? Do I need to bring the box up to 2.9? Here's my dmesg:
