Well, after one week of head scratching I've finally pin-pointed the
problem...: faulty motherboard/memory slots. DUH! I just tried a few
diffrent combinations of slot/dimms and the problem is very consistent
so it might be the mobo that's really screwed... I'll do some more
tests tomorrow...
Anyways, thanx for the help!
PS: I'm sorry for all the bad things I might have thought about OpenBSD
during this ordeal! ;)

Just guessing here JC, did you try to download fresh STABLE sources from
a CVS server ? I just installed 2.9 yesterday w/ a custom kernel on a
similar machine (PII 233/64Mb). I fetched the source tarball like you
did. The kernel compilation went fine but a system make build hanged. So
I re-tried this time by fetching the sources from Wim's CVS server
(anoncvs.be.openbsd.org) and I started the process again and everything
went fine. So try by getting STABLE sources and maybe tweak your kernel
a bit (I know, no particular *good* reason for that one but shit happens
:) ) and lemme know.
