named fails to do zone transfers -- gives 'can't make tmpfile [snip]: Bad file descriptor' error

I'm running Bind 4.9.8 on OpenBSD 2.8 i386 (and the same Bind on a 2.9 snapshot) and getting the same error on both when trying to get some secondary zone support. Primaries, caching etc all OK. a snippet from /var/log/messages follows:-

thanks in anticipation
