It's as simple as:
$ echo "^[[31msomething.^[[0m" (where ^[ is the ESC character)
not returning anything. The 1 is for red. 4 for blue, for example,
works, as well as all the others I can think of. Only red doesn't.
I find that quite misterious.
In /sys/dev/wscons/wsdisplayvar.h WSCOL_RED is set to 1 as the others
are placed there respectively, but maybe that's not the right track, I
don't claim to know where to look.
This is a current i386 built yesterday (2.9-beta).
Relevant dmesg information:
