I've just finished upgrading 2.8-release to 2.8-stable (i386). Just a few numbers for you:
make obj lasted 5m, created 1MB in /usr/obj
make build lasted 11h33m, created 212MB in /usr/obj
No more significant changes in free disk space were observed.
I'm especially suprised with time results, as my box is just an Intel 166-MMX with 40MB of RAM.
/usr/obj is placed on other harddisk then /usr/src - I think it gave me a big performance boost.
