Uhm, what do you mean by this?
Have you just copied src.tar.gz to /usr/src or what?
You need to 'cd /usr' and do a 'tar zxvf /path/to/src.tar.gz' from
there.
It will create the /usr/src dir if it's not already there, and will
include /usr/src/sys/arch/i386/conf/GENERIC.
If you only want to recompile the kernel you can unpack sys.tar.gz from
the CD instead, it's the kernel source only.
