softupdates in -current from last night

I just rebuilded my -current box from last night cvs and
saw this upon booting GENERIC:

|wd0a: DMA error reading fsbn 435360 of 435360-435391 (wd0 bn 435423; cn 431 tn 15 sn 30),
|retrying
|wd0: soft error (corrected)
|wd1a: DMA error reading fsbn 16 of 16-31 (wd1 bn 79; cn 0 tn 1 sn 16), retrying
|wd1a: DMA error reading fsbn 16 of 16-31 (wd1 bn 79; cn 0 tn 1 sn 16), retrying
|wd1a: DMA error reading fsbn 16 of 16-31 (wd1 bn 79; cn 0 tn 1 sn 16), retrying
|wd1: transfer error, downgrading to Ultra-DMA mode 1
|wd1(pciide0:1:0): using PIO mode 4, Ultra-DMA mode 1

I never saw these messages before, all hard-drives run just fine and are technically
ok (and these messages appeared for *all* three of them).
On some filesystems softupdates were on before last nights rebuild. Once I booted
with last nights kernel, softupdates on those filesystems were off and I try to
re-enable them, this message appears in /var/log/messages:

|[18:19:11] root_(_at_)_mad /home/fkr $ tunefs -s enable /dev/wd2b
|tunefs: See mount(8) for details about how to enable soft updates.

|Apr 10 18:19:12 mad /bsd: wd2b: DMA error reading fsbn 16 of 16-31 (wd2 bn 2457520; cn 2438
|tn 0 sn 16), retrying
|Apr 10 18:19:13 mad /bsd: wd2: soft error (corrected)

Attached to the mail is a dmesg.
Any ideas what could cause this trouble?
