Resolved: Xfree86 SNAFU

Thanks to Seth Arnold for pointing out that the X11 stuff is just regular .tar.gz files. Just in case somebody else tries to run the S3 Savage 4 Linux install, I'll post the fix for the archives.

Here's what I did to get back to my default install:

1. Copy x* from /cdrom/2.7/i386 to /tmp.

2. cd /tmp

3. gunzip x*

4. tar -xvf xbase27.tar

5. realize I'm doing it wrong, move on to

What I should have done to get it back:

1. Copy the x* files from the CD to /

2. gunzip 'em.

3. tar -xvf each of them in turn from /

This got me back to a clean XFree86 install from which I could run xf86config. Not that running xf86config does me much good, but that's another post.

Greetings:

I've just built a new box to run OpenBSD. After beating my head against a broken Toshiba Equium 7100S, I replaced everything but the processor & the RAM, finally got it running after I updated the BIOS on the ATTO ExpressPCI SCSI card. After skimming the XFree86 web pages, I got a Diamond/S3 card for video because the FAQ said they were best supported & Onsale had them for $40. Unfortunately, this card is a Savage 4, which is *not* well supported. Long story short, I ran the Linux install script for this chipset & hosed my X install. Is there a way to reinstall X without reinstalling the whole system? I'm guessing pkg_add won't work, since it doesn't show up in pkg_info.
