Customized CVS upgrades.

Greetings all,
I have been looking for ways to upgrade via CVS without installing a full
system. Eg. there's a reason that a particular system only has the few
required packages on it, and no more, it's sad to see the neat configuration
being smashed by X and others when building -stable.

Did I overlook some information on how to specify which part of a system
should be built, or is it not possible short of hacking at Makefiles?
