OK, following up on my own post:
I tried recompiling expr from source, with debug symbols and no
optimizations:
rain:/usr/src/bin/expr# cc -g -c expr.c
rain:/usr/src/bin/expr# cc -static -o expr expr.o
No more problems! IMHO this strongly suggests a bug somewhere, I can't see
how my hardware could cause this...
Note: The problem was 100% persistent and reproducible with the
installation-supplied expr program, and is now 100% persistent OK with my
newly compiled version.
