CRC error when installing 2.6

I tried to install 2.6, but I'm getting all kinds of CRC "soft errors"
after doing the disk labelling, when the partitioning/formatting is
being done. I've tried all kinds of BIOS/disk geometry combinations...
The thing is, when I go back to 2.5 and do a fresh install, everything's
fine. 

I'm using a Western Digital Caviar AC14300 drive, and I gather the WD
configurations are notoriously difficult, but is this a known problem?
Haven't seen it mentioned anywhere...
