(not fixed) htmerge and open files

After recompiling the kernel with a modified maxfiles value, htmerge still
fails. When I run pstat -T, it doesn't seem like the maxfiles limit is
reached:

137/4592 files
    775 vnodes
0M/120M swap space
sort: /var/tmp/sort.VMTMsE3303: Too many open files

Can anyone shine a light on this?
