In the interests of perpetuating a silly thread...
Several people has said one or more of the following:
* UNIX should be hard. It keeps your admins on their toes.
* Administrators install apps, not users. Who cares if a user
couldn't do it.
* Elitism is the heart of UNIX.
These are among the reasons that Windows rules the desktop and UNIX does
not. These attitudes all show a hidden assumption: UNIX cannot and will
not run on the desktop. You always have an operator running the system.
These assumptions are invalid. Why? Because organizations such as Red Hat
have made it easy. Even for big machines, easy manageability is essential.
Realize this: MacOS X has the potential to establish itself as the most
popular UNIX variant. Why? Because it's easy to use, users can install
apps, and it doesn't have this elitist "if you don't know what you're
doing, you should go home and play with your toys until you're ready to
play with the big boys."
I'm reminded of the Dilbert where Wally meets the UNIX user in the hall.
