pthreads

OK, I'm a little bit confused.  I'm trying to build some things
with thread support (perl and gtk, to be specific), and the tests seem
to fail.  I built libc_r and I'm linking with -pthread, and get no
compile errors, but the threaded code doesn't seem to behave as it
should.  Looking in the source tree, I see libc_r and libpthread,
which seem to be mutually exclusive;  or am I missing something?  Can
anyone help?
