2.2: status messages when accessing scsi tape devices

Hello,

Since I switched  from 2.1 to 2.2  I always  get status messages  when
accessing any scsi tape device (QIC, DAT). Is this intentional?? It is
quite  bothering  for  my taste.  How   can I  disable this behaviour?
syslog.conf?   kernel? Is there     a  good reason  why  the   release
distribution includes status message printing?
