Don't ask me how, but things are now working :\ Thanks for those who
responded, but I tried (more our of desperation than anything else) at
2:00am this morning and everything worked.
The only thing in /etc that has been changed since I last tried
unsuccessfully was the localtime link (I set it to Sydney). So, I'm
stumped, but happy.
The only possibility I can think of is when I put in a switch box to allow
me to switch serial connections from my Q840AV and my modem or the BSD box,
maybe I jiggled cables a little, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case (I
had already checked the various cables).
