Problems with wdc1 and ATAPI

My BIOS requires that the ATAPI CDROM drive be on the second IDE controller. 
I've enabled wdc1 in my kernel.  The kernel fails to recognize wdc1 upon
bootup and thus does not recognize my ATAPI CDROM drive.

Any suggestions, fixes, etc?
