Both the Dec 7 and Dec 9 snapshots change the permissions on the root
directory so as to be accessible only by root. This prevents non-root
logins as well as disabling some services.
As Jacob Meuser pointed out on Monday, this is due to the record for "."
in test34.tgz:
% pax -vzdf test34.tgz .
drwx------ 2 root wheel 0 Dec 9 16:53 .
pax: ustar vol 1, 6347 files, 93618176 bytes read, 0 bytes written.
As far as I can tell, previous snapshots did not include "." in
test34.tgz.
