The following reply was made to PR kernel/137; it has been noted by GNATS.

This happens also on OpenBSD 2.8-current (i386, 16-NOV-2000):
grep: memory exhausted
pagedaemon; deadlock detected!
(endless loop of blue kernel printf, see uvm_wait in /sys/uvm/uvm_pdaemon.c)
switching virtual console reboots the system.
The Linux box of my colleague next door (RH 6.0) survives this !!!!
grep: memory exhausted
(repeated until control C)
BUT it is possible to log in (slowly, the swap is not exhausted),
to change VT, look at top, etc... NO VM MISHAP
something has to be done
