sparc minroot/ftp install

When installing via ftp from the minroot on a sparc
I keep getting the following error:

tar: failed open to read /dev/rmt8 <no such file or directory>

and end up in a 'tar shell' where I shall enter a different 
source. Even entering '-' there doesn't help.
It seem the tar you use does not recognize it's command line
too good: tar --unlink -zxvpf -

The NFS install I started now seem to work.
