Here at the Computer Shop in Calgary we process the orders submitted to
the OpenBSD web pages. We seem to get more and more persistent attempts
to rip off the CD's and T-shirts using stolen credit card numbers, even as
we tighten our filters against such things.
Actually, most of the problems are from overseas, and from countries in
Eastern Europe, and some Far Eastern spots like Indonesia. In fact, for
these relatively small items, countries that don't suffer from really
broken standards of law and order, seem not to generate enough fraud to
matter, and if some trickster does happen to rip off a copy or two of
OpenBSD, well I guess we can take it as a compliment, a measure of the
interest out there, at any risk!
Actually, we have more of a problem with the mail system failing to
deliver. That costs us more than the deliberate rip offs, and bothers me
more because then we look bad.
However, on the rip off front, there is one chap that seems to regularly
order from us, using bad credit cards, and last year we did get one
reversal from a credit card owner in a different state, when we failed to
spot the rip off.
So my question to the group, and various defenders of the OpenBSD
faith, what action do you recommend we take when someone blithely keeps
submitting orders with bad cards. Anything beyond filtering for his
address?
Here are copies of the three orders from last year. We
note: (1) different credit card number every time (not shown) (2) Same
address every time (3) different phone number every time -- and person who
answers claims nothing to do with the person who ordered (4) Different
connection source every time.
Anyone on Las Vegas brave enough to drop in on 1216 East Owens? Should
we file a complaint with the police? Or should we just send him a free
copy of each new release, considering how important it seems to be to
him, and how poorly he seems to be able to afford it? What do you think?
