PPP Downloading stream problem?
Hi,
I run 1 machine/i386/pentium180/64M with OpenBSD 2.4, with kernel
patched
with all latest kernel patches.
I have the following problem. I run 33.6 async leased line with that
PPP,
connected to CISCO router, from the machine in question.
Well, I have some load on the line, which is sometimes, quite big,
and makes the machine go crazy with system load of 1.0 and more.
On this machine I run the followinig servers:
--- ppp[user land] -- in the accounting it shows that most of time of
the CPU
spent here
--- squid - the second in the listing of Resource Eaters
--- httpd
--- sendmail
--- cucipop
The problem is that the download speed, from the side of the BSD,.
is REALLY GREAT, but because the line is CONSTANTLY LOADED,
the UPLOADING speed is very low.
So, with this I have these 2 GREAT problems:
--- All HTTPD requests made from the Internet to the BSD, are not beeing
replyed in time, and the download speed from the Internet is
1b/s and
allways shows stalled.
--- The mail[sendmail] always shows connection timeout.
The BSD in question is sitting behind 16 machines with 100 MB/s.
I have 2 questions:
--- Do you think, that if I switch from USER land PPP to server side
PPP[PPPD]
the load of the machine will go in normal [say 0.15-0.20], and
--- Do you think, that the download of the home pages from the Internet,
will
speed up, with this change.
--- Do I have a problem with the load of the machine being introduced
mainly
from the USER Land PPP process, and that is directly connected
to the
inpossibillity to download anything from the BSD, or I have a
problem
with and olny with the type of the leased line i run-i.e.
asynchronos,
which is in nature half duplex.
Thank you,
