OpenBSD itself has an enhanced bind 4.9.7 integrated into the OS.

That had to be built ;0

On an AMD K6-2 333 (running at 350 if anyone cares..) I can build
bind 4.9.7 with OpenBSD 2.4 without fail.

On a Pentium II 400 I can build it even faster. But no problems.. All run
OpenBSD 2.4..

Perhaps you are suffering from a bug of the older Pentium chips?
Or all of your machines have bad RAM ????
