Okay, I'm not sure I have your answer, but I've come across this one
a few times.  It's more than just xl's.  I've had it happen on an sis,
as well.  I cured both of them by moving the card to a slot closer
to my AGP slot.  

Of course, this doesn't help you a whole lot with your laptop.  Do you
have a typeIII slot?  Try moving the card into the other slot?

In the end, I have -no- idea what causes it, only that moving my cards
around fixed my problems.  I'm sorry I can't help more.
