ssh/xterm strangeness

>From a slightly newer than 2.9 system to a -current system:

 $ ssh mc-w

That session stays around forever (as it should).   However, if instead
I do:

 $ ssh -n mc-w xterm -geometry 80x36 &

the session will go away in about 2 hours of idle time.  The error is:

    xterm:  fatal IO error 60 (Connection timed out) or KillClient on X \
            server "mc.wireless.snafu.org:11.0"

Local xterms (local to mc-w) do not time out.

Any hints on where to look to track this down?
