You're confusing LICENSING with COPYRIGHT.

Notice how the FSF 
- releases material under the GPL,
- asks contributors to release their copyright to them.

I don't know, maybe their propaganda material is not so clear about these
issues ?  Or maybe some of their acolytes like to FUD ?

Both are independent issues.  Code copyright is perfectly orthogonal to
licenses.  Notice how tools such as Perl are released under two distinct,
independent licenses. Notice how it's perfectly feasible to release code 
under BOTH GPL and BSD.
