the guys who own the patent charge something like 75 cents per copy
of any music player which does mp3.

i believe it only applies to commercial software/hardware vendors, but
with how much latitude license/patent owners get when enforcing their
restrictive terms, it pays to be on the safe side.

fyi, redhat now ships xmms the same way.
