I've only tested this in a Armada M700 with tweaked kernel to give me a
pccom2 at isa0 port 0x3e8/8 irq 3: ns16550a, 16 byte fifo

How-to:

Start IR on the phone and point it towards IReye on laptop, then

$ sudo ircomm -v 2
Using /dev/tty02
discovered Nokia 6210, address=14ac, hints=PnP, Modem, Fax, Telephony, IrCOMM, IrOBEX
query completed
115200 baud
LAP connected
comm connected

In test to I send from the phone to the laptop. Here you start irs
before starting fiddling with the phone.

$ sudo irs -v 2 -o
Using /dev/tty02
participating in discovery
discovered Nokia 6210, address=6ac6, hints=PnP, Modem, Fax, Telephony, IrCOMM, IrOBEX
accepting connection
115200 baud
ias accept
GetValueByClass Device DeviceName
 -> 0 grax
GetValueByClass OBEX IrDA:TinyTP:LsapSel
 -> 1 1
ias closed
obex connect version=1.0 flags=0 maxlen=123
obex put
object 0.obex
obex connection closed
reset
LAP disconnected

Next step is to get pppd running over this.
