I could disable oss, would that upset anyone?

Really. I tried it on a PIII-500 and it was way behind ogle...

Yup, some things will change here. Than againg, maybe is a good thing to
tack on --with-extra{inc,lib}dir and just use whats available?

Well, it will not run anymore (at least not on my machine ;).
