Was it slow before changing X servers? I ask because what you describe
has been SOP on the sparc for as long as I can remember. I've learned to
"nice" all compiles. Actually, it seems that make and the linker are the
worst offenders. Also, keystrokes are delayed and sometimes duplicated
when the machine is quite busy. I never suspected the X server as the
cause, though.
Just wondering if the problems could be related.
