I *think* I remember having similar problems with the SS5. Fixing
it required changing to 8/N/1, I believe. I don't know anything about
tip, so I can't tell if that's what you're using or what.
You might try cu, if you're open to it. I find it easier to set
up (there is nothing to set up, usually), and fine for what I need.
