RAM disk behavior and root_device

Can anyone provide any insight as to what/where I need to look to get a
RAMDISK configuration to boot into multi-user mode automatically? I've got
all of the necessary init/rc files but they are apparently ignored.

Also what is "root_device"? I thought I'd see rd0 as the device but that is
apparently not the case. Does the entry

root_device / ro,nosuid

make sense as an /etc/fstab entry?
