octave compile==system freeze

While trying to compile octave-2.0.13 on a 2.3/i386 system, the build
gets to the last linking stage and my system freezes up. The freeze is
so tight that it only responds to a reset. Has anybody got octave to compile?
I have never seen a unix system lock up like that during a compile
before. I had to rebuild gcc with the new version of g77 in order to
get octave to build. I installed the new biniaries in /usr/local/bin.
Would that have anything to do with this behavior?
