atapi cdrom on laptop

I just tried to install openbsd on a toshiba 550
laptop, pentium 266. Everything worked fine except it won't
recognize the atapi cdrom drive. The boot messages
show:

atapibus0 at wdc0

then it hangs for a minute, and continues without
finding the cdrom.

This is version 2.3 with the GENERIC kernel, i.e. :

atapibus* at wdc?
acd*    at atapibus? drive?

Any ideas on what to try?
