ibook + xfree86

I'm having little success getting X to work on my
ibook :-)

System: OPENBSD_3_5
Chipset: "ATI Radeon Mobility 9200 (M9+) 5C63 (AGP)"
(ChipID = 0x5c63)

When I startx the display flikers in a very horrible
fashion. When I exit X (by means of quiting my window
manager) I get the blank (black) screen. It looks
like that at this point the computer is in such a bad
state that my only option is to rest it.

Attempts to /sbin/reboot from a shell through an xterm
while in fliker-mode-X also fail. This only gets me
into the blank (black) screen mode. My only option at
this point is (again) to rest the computer.

I've done some google-ing with little success.

I should mention that X seems to work just fine w/the
(should I say) "default" /etc/X11/XF86Config file that
the openbsd-3.5 placed there at install time. But that
is just using 8bit mode. I must rather live in
character-mode rather than 8bpp 8)

I don't mind experimenting with stuff, and that was my
original plan. That is up until i figured out that I
don't seem to be able to reboot the box properly --
that is I end up resting and going through the fsck bs
:\

"WARNING: / was not properly umounted" (blah blah ..)

[* getting off-track for a second here]

I had to reset the laptop quite a few times
experimenting with differing XF86Config setting
variations. I noticed a few files getting corrupted
after reboot-up.

I don't know exactly what is causing this file
corruption. Either X, when exiting, is clobbering the
files or this is a result of the not-so-graceful
shutdowns of the OS (i.e., resets).

The two files that I found to be clobbered (thus far)
are:

  /var/log/XFree86.0.log

and more seriously:

  ~/.fonts.cache-1

Incidentlly, if you find that some programs (e.g.,
xclock) keep crashing in FcCharSetCopy() with sig 11,
a good place to look is the latter file. Removing it
and letting it get recreated solves the problem :-)

[** back to my original problem]

If there is anyone out there with an ibook (or
similar) who can offer some suggestions I would
appreciate it very much :-)

Thanks,
--patrick

Some info that I did find:
- A patch which seems to be already be applied to the
XF4 sources I used to build the system:

http://mail-index.netbsd.org/tech-x11/2004/06/24/0003.html

This person has a very similar system and my final
/etc/X11/XF86Config file was fashioned after it:
