Point taken:
-NetBSD 1.6.2 iso: just automatically reboots as it begins to access
the usb cd-rom drive...no messages displayed on screen.

-FreeBSD 4.9 iso: stops w/ "Read error" as the it begins to access
the usb cd-rom drive

-OpenBSD 3.5 iso: stops with:
Loading
ERR X
as it begins to read the usb-drive

BIOS says AWARD BIOS 6.00PG

My other Via Box returns:
Loading
ERR R

I'll save you the trouble and just paste a related reply from you...
"ERR X" comes from the PBR (biosboot) (see FAQ 14 section on how
OpenBSD/i386 boots), NOT the Kernel. The PBR is 512 bytes in size,
there are no "drivers"...the magic is that it has to use completely BIOS
based techniques to load the OS."

Not whining here, sorry if it sounded like that...just curious and a
bit clueless about how things work at this level. My only point here
was that it seemed to be an issue common to the *BSDs and I'm sure
that a fix by one of the distributions would benefit the others as
well.

My job has lately been sending a lot of these little, passively cooled
Via boxes my way for some Windows development and whenever I get a new
one I just try to install OpenBSD for kicks and to submit a DMESG.
