Never used KMix on OpenBSD, but I guess the same principle applies. 
Check the user/group for the audio/mixer devices and see if you have 
to add yourself to other groups.

Another hint is that applets that dock in KDE's system tray usually 
display a window when you left-click on its icon.

About the device user/group/permissions thing, I guess those should be 
taken care of by tweaking fbtab(5), but perhaps kdm does not comply 
with that. I was not successful in my (very small) attempt to do it 
the Right Way (tm).
