Yes it would correct the issue, but no, you don't want to do that. 
It's like the only-tool-hammer-all-problems-nail thing.

Oh, I've been bitten by that as well. If you "ls -l /dev/cd0*" you'll 
see that the devices are readable if you are in the operator group. 
Add your user to this group and logout/login. Presto. :-)
