Sorry, I should have been more clear in my question. What I meant to 
ask was "is there a list of which options can go in sysctl.conf vs 
which ones need to be compiled into the kernel?"

Where do you get these? My favorite, of course, is "...Set me up. 
Bitch set me up!", which can be heard occasionally on "Fox's Funniest 
Surveillance Videos" & similar shows.
