Of course it is. The yellow press always manages to stain the
reputation of a random target if it is possible to raise the
number of their readers since they address a much larger
audience than eg. this list.

Apart from that, being on a short budget is a good way for
getting bad reps any day, not only in the OpenBSD world.

Now you know what you can do to help remedy the situation:
Go to http://www.openbsd.org/orders.html and peruse liberally.

It's a remarkable achievement to have gained that widespread
a recognition and reputation despite the money factor.
