2.9 and OpenSSL?

Has anyone patched the ssl libraries in 2.9?  I don't want to
upgrade to 3.1 just now, and before I jump into doing it,
was wondering if anyone else already has and has war stories
to share?  The last patch on the website is for the resolver
library (027_resolver.patch) for 2.9. (yes, I know it's
not supported, I'm not asking for support from Theo et al).

I haven't found anything useful using google or searching the
mailing list archives for ssl and 2.9
