I have been running GIMPS for a few years now. I suggest using the
freebsd version. Just last week after leaving quite an old version in
"set and forget" mode for a long while I got the latest binary from:
ftp://mersenne.org/gimps/mprime21-freebsd.tar.gz
and upgraded. There is also sprime21-freebsd which is statically linked.
Enable compat_freebsd (already in GENERIC, methinks) and install the
freebsd_lib port.
Start it from rc.local and pipe the output through "logger" (with an
appropriately large value for "OutputIterations" in prime.ini), so you
can see how long you have to wait before you can claim you $100,000
prize, err, contribute to the maths world a new Mersenne prime.
As for the other questions (SIGILL, etc), but, sorry, can't help.
