IBSS mode is standardized.  Demo ad-hoc mode isn't.  I haven't been
able to test, since I only have Lucent cards, but I've been told that
demo ad-hoc doesn't interoperate with other cards.  Try interoperating
with a Linux box, even with Lucent cards, for example.

I'd guess that this is a driver restriction.  It also says:

  Note: this option is provided for experimental purposes only: en-
  abling the creation of an IBSS on a host system doesn't appear to
  actually work.

That is demonstrably incorrect.  I use this feature in my home
network.
